Craigievar Castle
The castle will be closed from 1st September 2005 until Easter 2007 for restoration.
This fairytale-like castle, which exemplifies some of the best Scottish Baronial architecture, seems to have grown naturally out of the beautiful rolling hillsides of Aberdeenshire. The Great Tower stands just as it was when completed by Master William Forbes - 'Danzig Willie' - in 1626. The simplicity of its lower towers contrasts perfectly with the turrets, the cupolas and corbelling which embellish the roof line.
Within its walls the collection includes an excellent show of family portraits and 17th-and 18-th century furniture. This perfect Scottish castle remains as unspoiled as it was when lived in by the Forbes-Sempill family.

he Tolbooth is one of the oldest buildings in Aberdeen and one of the best preserved 17th century Scottish gaols. Built between 1616 and 1629 the Wardhouse, now known as The Tolbooth, was a gaol for those awaiting either trial in the adjacent court or punishment.
Now a museum, The Tolbooth focuses on the history of crime and punishment within the city. Exhibits range from medieval instruments of punishment to the original 17th century mercat cross column, a landmark which stood in the Castlegate until it was replaced in the mid 1990s. Exciting re-constructions, models, displays and interactive exhibits present the history and development of local government.
The Museum features a packed programme of events for all ages with a variety of talks on aspects of local history and exhibitions featuring objects related to Mary Queen of Scots, James VI, crime and punishment.
Admission: The Tolbooth Museum is currently closed to the public. However it will be open for certain special events at different times of the year. Access and tours can be arranged for school and community groups.

Why should I visit? This elegant 16th century town house now contains an attractive series of period room settings, recalling the graceful furnishings of earlier times. The displays include a suite of 17th century rooms, a Regency Parlour and an Edwardian Nursery. Visitors can also see a unique series of religious paintings and find out more about archaeology, coins and local history. The Costume Gallery features a changing programme of fashions and accessories. The Cellar café bar serves light snacks and refreshments.
The historic nature of this building means that access to the upper floors is limited for visitors with mobility difficulties. Toilets and The Cellar café bar are accessible from the ground floor.
