Royal Aberdeen Golf Club

The Club today boasts a healthy membership of both local UK and overseas members. Promoting and encouraging the junior category is also high on the list of the Club's priorities. There is consistently a waiting list for full membership.

Since its earliest beginnings Royal Aberdeen Golf Club has promoted the game, in the Granite City, by bringing major players to the club. Morris, Hagen, Cotton, Lema, Jacklin, Norman, Watson and Brooks to name but a few.

In recent years major national and international events have been contested over the classic Balgownie Links, by both professional and amateur. As with many great courses the policy of the club is to keep pace with the modern game and to that end subtle changes are regularly introduced to keep the course interesting and challenging for all categories of golfer. Maintaining and combining tradition and quality is reflected on and off the courses. Extensive renovation within and around the clubhouse in the late 90's has attracted much praise and enhanced the pleasure and comfort of members and visitors alike.

Visitors are made extremely welcome at Royal Aberdeen and they may play our championship course, Balgownie Links provided they have a handicap of 24 or under.

Aberdeen Woods

The six woodlands which collectively make up the Aberdeen Woods encircle the City of Aberdeen and provide opportunities for excercise and recreation away from the stress of the city streets. Each wood has its own individual character, and is keenly supported by its own "locals"! We are happy that people walk their dogs in the Aberdeen Woods, but dogs must be kept under control all the time. For the sake of the wildlife in the woods and the other people who use them, please keep your dog under control and do not allow it to foul the paths.

Woods: Kirkhill Forest - Foggieton Wood - Tyrebagger Wood - Countesswells - Parkhill - Rotten O'Gairm

How to Get There:
Various woods within Aberdeen City boundary on the outskirts of Aberdeen. See individual woods for more detailed directions.

Kirkhill Forest

Kirkhill is a working forest which really has something for everyone! There are waymarked circular walks, a permanent orienteering course, a horse trail and a cycle trail. Also brand new in 2005 the mountain bike fun park - look out for further developments over the next 2 years.

There are great views to the north east from the summit of Tyrebagger Hill, and a whole network of forest roads and tracks for you to explore. The main entrance is less then 5 km from the outskirts of Aberdeen - a real "green lung" for the city.

This wood is very popular with walkers, horse riders and especially with cyclists. To try to avoid conflict, we have waymarked different routes. There is room for everyone on the wide forest roads, but on the narrow trials cyclists and horse riders should avoid using the waymarked footpaths, clearly marked by either a banded post or a footprint with an arrow. These paths are vulnerable to erosion from wheel and hoof marks and are dedicated to walkers only.

Foggieton Wood

Foggieton Wood is an interesting mixture of broadleaved and conifer trees, which is very popular with local walkers. The beech trees which shade the car park were planted in the 1860's, and underneath them is a clear example of "rig-and-furrow". This old type of land use which formed long ridges and hollows was used in the 18th and early 19th centuries in areas where the soil was shallow or badly drained.

A series of way marked walks leads out from the car park and a horse trail winds through the woods.

Every trail in this wood is waymarked as either a walk or a horse trail, and for this reason cycling is not permitted in this wood. We ask cyclists to respect our efforts to zone this small wood, and suggest that they visit Kirkhill where a cycle trail is waymarked.

Tyrebagger Wood

This mature wood has two waymarked walks, three car parks (one is only open in December), several woodland sculptures, and links to longer walks on Elrick and Brimmond Hills which also have outdoor sculptures.

The eastern side of the wood has superb mature Douglas firs, towering above the forest floor like cathedral pillars, shading a carpet of ferns and wood sorrel.

The paths in Tyrebagger are all waymarked as walks, so cycling and horse riding are not permitted in this wood. Across the dual carriageway in Kirkhill we have waymarked horse and cycle routes. Please respect our efforts to zone this small wood, and do not cycle or ride on these paths.

Countesswells

This small wood is the most popular in the whole forest district! There are three waymarked circular walks which lead you through a variety of woodland from the huge mature conifers, which create a cathedral-like atmosphere, to open viewpoints over the surrounding farmland. The waymarked horse trail which threads its way along the forest edge is also very popular with riders.

Parkhill

Parkhill is a small wood with two short circular waymarked walks and a short dog exercise loop. The paths and car park were only put in in 1999, when extensive thining was also undertaken, and since then the wood has become more and more popular with people who want a short walk.

The paths which leave from the car park are all waymarked as footpaths. These paths are vulnerable to erosion cause by wheels and hooves. For this reason we would ask cyclists and horse riders to respect our efforts to zone this very small wood, and not to ride here. Our nearest facilities for horse riders and cyclists are at Kirkhill, on the other side of Dyce.

Rotten O'Gairm

Rotten O'Gairn is a wood planted on the gentle slopes of Gairn Hill. The main tree species are beech, Scots pine, larch and spruce, though there are also other species present.

A waymarked circular walk leads out from the car park, and a waymarked horse route provides access to the northern part of this wood.

Rotten O'Gairn wood joins onto Countesswells wood, allowing longer walks for those with a keen sense of direction - or a map!
