Blaise Castle House Museum

Henbury Road , Henbury, Bristol BS10 7QS
0117 950 6789

Everyday life - childhood, schooldays, washing and cooking and cleaning - in a fine late 18th-century (Georgian) house. Blaise Castle Estate, the site of an Iron Age settlement and a Roman garrison, is now surrounded by suburban Bristol; it was once the home of the Harford family. John Harford has the present house built in the 1790s, and engaged Humphry Repton to landscape his garden. Repton's Red Book for Blaise is now one of the museum's treasures, alongside children's toys, mangles and washtubs, and elegant Victorian gowns.

Open Apr-Oct, Sat-Wed, 10am-5pm.

Bristol Industrial Museum

Princes Wharf, Wapping Road, Bristol BS1 4RN
0117 925 1470

Cranes, trains and the Floating Harbour provide the setting for a museum housed in a former transit shed. Its exhibits range from models of Bristol's early ships to a mock-up of the flight deck of Concorde, with buses, cars and motorcycles in between. The work of maintaining the museum's engines and boats is continuous, and BIM has a lively team of volunteers who do just that. THey also help to run the events in which everyone can join!

Open Apr-Oct, Sat-Wed, 10am- 5pm.
Open Nov-Mar, Sat-Sun, 10am-5pm.

Ask for details of the events and activities which run most weekends between March and November.

Fleet Air Museum

RNAS Yeovilton, Ilchester, Somerset BA22 8HT
01935 840 565

Experience the exciting history of Britain's Flying Navy. In the Summer of 1963, a small public enclosure was opened at Yeovilton to allow the public to stop and watch the Fleet Air Arm at work. To increase interest, the Commanding Officer at the time proposed that the 3 historic aircraft held by the Station should be placed on view by the Enclosure. Putting the aircraft in the open caused them to deteriorate and so it was decided to place them under cover.

From this small beginning the Museum opened in May 1964 with 8 aircraft and has continued to expand ever since. Today the Museum covers 6.5 acres, has more than 40 aircraft on display with as many again in storage or refurbishment. It is now one of the largest aviation museums in the World.

The Fleet Air Museum is a little way from Bristol; take the Bridgwater turnoff from the M5 and follow signs towards Yeovil.

It also has its own website.
