Endinburgh Museum
142 Canongate, Royal Mile. Tel: 0131 529 4143
Edinburgh Museum is home to important collections relating to the history of Edinburgh, from prehistoric times to the present day. If you've heard the story of ' Greyfriars Bobby ', you will be most excited to see his collar and feeding bowl, and the original plaster model for the bronze statue in Candlemaker Row. One of Edinburghs greatest treasures is the National Covenant, signed by Scotland's presbyterian leadership in 1638, while the large collections of Scottish pottery and items relating to Field Marshal Earl Haig are of high national importance.
The Edinburgh Museum also includes a large collection of silver, glass, and a colourful collection of shop signs.
The Museum of Edinburgh is lovely Huntly House, which faces on to the Canongate and is dated from the 16th century. The museum was extended in the 17th and 18th centuries, it has been occupied by a wide variety of owners and tenants, including aristocrats, merchants and working people. Huntly House was named the ' speaking house ' by Victorian antiquarian Robert Chambers because of the Latin inscriptions on its facade. It is appropriate that the ' speaking house ' now accomodates The Museum of Edinburgh.
The Edinburgh Museum regularly posts temporary exhibitions drawn from local history and attractive art collections.
