Manchester Art Gallery
Why should I visit? Manchester Art Gallery has six centuries of British and continental fine art including works by Pablo Picasso, Dante Gabriel Rossetti, John Everett Millais, William Holman Hunt, Ford Madox Brown, Edward Coley Burne-Jones and John William Waterhouse. Manchester Art Gallery is recognised for its definitive Victorian British oils and watercolours.
In addition to thousands of paintings, the gallery has twelve thousand objects of decorative art including Greek pottery, ceramics, glass, metalwork, contemporary furniture, antiques, and even wallpapers.
Manchester Art G allery also features fun interactive displays for children and various special exhibitions.

The Lowry
Why should I visit? The Lowry, named for Manchester’s most famous artist, features a huge variety of performing and visual arts. The Lowry has two theatres for drama, opera, ballet, dance, musicals, children's shows, popular music, jazz, folk and comedy.
The Lowry has 1,610 square metres of gallery space showing the works of L S Lowry alongside various contemporary exhibitions. An interactive attraction, ArtWorks, has been introduced to encourage visitors’ creativity.
Manchester-born Laurence Stephen Lowry ( 1887-1976) worked as a clerk until he was 65, using his spare time for painting. In the 1920s he began his most well-known works, which were grim industrial cityscapes and towns speckled with faceless, matchstick people. Lowry’s work did not attract serious attention until the 1940s.

The Cornerhouse
Why should I visit? The Cornerhouse is a trendy urban gallery featuring original contemporary art. The gallery is famous for unveiling fresh work by inventive young artists. The Cornerhouse also has exhibitions by well-known artists from Britain and abroad, and regularly commissions new work.
Cornerhouse exhibitions usually have a strong educational aspect. Several Cornerhouse exhibitions have toured within the UK and internationally.
The Cornerhouse also has a cinema showing arty, experimental and foreign films.

Whitworth Art Gallery
Why should I visit? The world-famous Whitworth Art Gallery at the University of Manchester houses an immense range of watercolours, prints, drawings, modern art and sculpture. The Whitworth has the biggest collection of textiles and wallpapers outside London.
The gallery’s exhibitions are always changing and each one expresses different themes. A variety of tours, lectures, practical workshops and concerts accompanies each exhibition.
Whitworth Art Gallery was founded in 1889, and it joined the University of Manchester in 1958. The name Whitworth comes from Sir Joseph Whitworth (1803-87), a local engineer. Sir Whitworth left money in his will to fund the gallery and other local organisations.

Castlefield Gallery
Castlefield Gallery was established in 1984 by Manchester’s Artists Studio Association (MASA). Castlefield is one of the Britain's most successful artist-run galleries, and a celebrated spot for contemporary visual artists and their work.

How do I get there? Castlefield Gallery is at 2 Hewitt Street, Knott Mill, Manchester, behind Deansgate train station.
By Metrolink tram: Go to G-Mex station.
By bus: The nearest bus stops are at the junction between Oxford Road and Whitworth Street. Continue by foot down Whitworth Street to Deansgate Station. Castlefield gallery is just behind the station. You can also take the bus to Piccadilly or St. Peter's Square and get a metrolink to G-Mex. By train: Go to Deansgate station. If you go to Manchester Piccadilly or Manchester Victoria stations, take the Metrolink in the Altrincham or Eccles direction to G-Mex. If you go to Manchester Oxford Road we are within walking distance. Continue down Whitworth Street until you get to Deansgate station.
