Hằng Nga Guesthouse ‘The Crazy House’ – Đà Lạt, Vietnam
Hằng Nga Guesthouse is most famously known as the Crazy House or “unusual house” or “spider web palace”. The owner of Crazy house is Ms. Dang Viet Nga (Đặng Việt Nga), she studied in Russia for 14 years and her major is architecture.
The idea behind The Crazy house is that Ms. Nga is a nature lover, she believes that people have destroyed their environment and that they are paying for their actions. By using her “Architecture language”, she wants to bring people back together with nature, animals and the environment; men and nature have to live in harmony with each other. This is the reason why Ms. Nga has designed her building in form of tree trunks in combination of colourful flowers and leaves.
The Crazy house covers an area of 2,000 square meters. The outside of the building looks like a giant tree. There are a total of 10 rooms to see when entering the hotel through “in-the-air tunnels. Each room is themed like a cave and is named after a wild animal, plant or insect.
Inside the tree-trunk building No.2, you will have a chance to visit the Termite room, Bamboo room, the Kangaroo room and finally the Gourd room, which has a big window on the ceiling meaning guests have a astronomer’s view of the stars overhead. Everything inside is uniquely designed and made by people of an ethnic minority including the fireplace and low furniture made from local hard-woods which are shaped along the curved walls. This is a place of true Architectural genius!
