The Tour de France, the world’s greatest cycle race, begins in Yorkshire this weekend and millions of cycling fans will be cheering on the likes of Chris Froome, Mark Cavendish, Geraint Thomas, Alberto Contador, Alejandro Valverde and Vincenzo Nibaldi, as they compete for the sport’s biggest prize.

The Grand Départ will take the cyclists through some of the county’s historic cities, including Leeds, York, Ripon, Harrogate and Sheffield.

The Tour will also pass within a few miles of Leeds Bradford Airport and passengers planning to fly into and out of the airport over the weekend of the 5/6th July will need to plan their journey carefully to avoid major delays and disruption.

It is recommended that plenty of time is given to reach Leeds Bradford Airport because of the significant increase in road traffic generated by the Tour and the many local diversions that will be in place.

Although the roads will reopen at various stages during the afternoon of both days, the likely traffic congestion could well mean that travelling by the normal routes to Leeds Bradford Airport may be unrealistic.
