Iceland’s WOW air are offering flights to the United States for just £99 including taxes, from today.
The low-cost airline will begin flights from Gatwick to Washington DC and Boston early next year and the introductory fares are available online for a selected number of sale-price seats.
Flights from Gatwick to Boston Logan International Airport will begin on March 27 and Baltimore Washington International on June 4.
However, the flights will take more than 10 hours and will fly via the Icelandic capital, Reykjavik. The journey time is around two-and-a-half hours longer than a typical direct flight.
Airbus A320’s will carry passengers from Gatwick to Reykjavik on the first leg of the journey and Airbus 321’s will finish the journey from Reykjavik to the United States.
Return flights start from £125 and additional charges include £39 to check in a bag and seats with extra legroom will cost £14 each.
Skúli Mogensen, CEO of WOW air said: “This is just the beginning of our plans to transform low-cost transatlantic flights. We’re opening up the market to a whole new market of travellers who might previously not have been able to afford transatlantic travel.
“The low-cost airline market is scrambling to offer cheap flights to North America and I’m happy that we‘ll be among the first to do so and at a price point that will no doubt cause our rivals to re-evaluate their plans.”
Flights to Boston will operate five days a week and to Washington four days a week.
